Historic Bearwood Corks Social Club up for sale with redevelopment potential.

The historic Bearwood Corks Social Club, located on the bustling A4030 Bearwood Road in Smethwick, is now on the market with Watling Real Estate and Bond Wolfe.

This former working men’s social club, which first opened its doors over 100 years ago, has been a hub for community events and activities.

It was the home venue for legendary jazz saxophonist Andy Hamilton’s Silvershine Jazz Club, and has hosted up-and-coming musicians like Soweto Kinch, Edgar Macias, and Xhosa Cole, who was named Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 2018.

The club, which fell into administration last month, is being sold by joint administrators Jon Roden and Rob Parker of Grant Thornton, with Watling Real Estate and Bond Wolfe acting as joint agents.

Bearwood Corks Social Club is situated adjacent to the main retail and residential area of Bearwood, with local occupiers including Iceland, Aldi, Argos, Costa Coffee, Peacocks, Lloyds Pharmacy, and Poundland. The property is also within walking distance of several schools, including Lordswood School, St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School, Bearwood Primary School, and Abbey Infant and Junior Schools.

Public transport is easily accessible, with various bus stops nearby providing regular services to Birmingham city centre and the wider West Midlands. Additionally, Smethwick Rolfe Street and Smethwick Galton Bridge train stations are in close proximity.

The property, originally a traditional red brick residential building, comprises 8,526 sq ft on a 0.25-acre site. Over the years, it has seen several extensions, including a two-storey ballroom and snooker room built in 1958.

Toby O’Sullivan, director at Watling Real Estate, commented, “The former Bearwood Corks Social Club is a prominent building in a popular residential suburb of Birmingham, offering excellent redevelopment potential for residential or mixed-use accommodation, subject to planning. We expect significant interest in the property given its location and alternative use potential, and encourage all interested parties to contact Watling or Bond Wolfe as soon as possible.”

The property is provisionally set to be auctioned by Bond Wolfe on 12 September, but pre-auction offers will be considered.
