The old Gala bingo hall has been placed up for sale, with potential for residential construction

A former bingo hall in Birmingham, previously bustling with activity, has been listed for sale with a price tag exceeding £1 million.

However, the deal includes specific stipulations for the new owners. The former Gala Bingo, later known as Buzz Bingo, which shuttered its doors in 2020, is up for grabs at £1.7 million. The property is being advertised as having potential for conversion into residential units.

This building, a well-known fixture at 1 Streetly Road in Stockland Green, holds memories of its heyday. Yet, it appears unlikely that any future owners will be able to revive its past popularity . This is due to the attached conditions of sale, which include plans to transform the space into a complex of over 50 apartments.

The 0.48-acre site currently houses a vacant former bingo hall and cinema that extends to 20,715 sq ft on the ground, mezzanine, first and second floors.

James Mattin, managing director of our commercial agency, explained that one of the pre-application approved designs was for a build-to-rent scheme of between 51 and 55 apartments in a mix of one, two and three-bedroomed layouts. The other pre-application approved design was for 44 to 46 sheltered housing apartments for the over 55s, which included three lounges, a fitness studio, gym, laundry, staff and scooter rooms.

Mr Mattin said: “This is a superb development opportunity in a prominent location at the junction of Streetly Road and Marsh Lane in Stockland Green, to the north of Birmingham city centre. The area generally contains dwellings with heights of two, three or more storeys, with the immediate neighbouring buildings having substantial footprints, such as The Village Green Inn. The local area is very urban and built up, with the busy five-road junction being a focused centre for the district with many individual and local shops, pubs and restaurants.”

Stockland Green is approximately 4.5 miles north of Birmingham city centre on an arterial road connecting the northern suburbs and around one mile from Junction 6 of the M6. Other strong transport links include bus routes along Streetly and Slade Roads running north to south and along Marsh Hill and Reservoir Road heading east and west, with Erdington Train Station under a mile away.

Mr Mattin added: “Good quality housing is needed in areas like this, and the plans for this property could provide a major opportunity for the right developer. Along with the two pre-application-approved designs, alternative schemes may well be considered subject to planning consent. For example, the vendor has also previously had plans drawn up for a 61 to 63 unit scheme for housing associations, charities or other institutions focusing on short-term accommodation.”
