Woman, 76, injured during dog attack in Birmingham - appeal to find owner

A 76-year-old woman spent four days in hospital following the incident.

Police are appealing for help in finding a man after a dog he was walking attacked another dog and badly injured its 76-year-old owner.

The victim was out with her labradoodle on Somerset Road in Handsworth when the dog, believed to be a bull breed, charged at them. She was knocked to the ground and left with a leg and head injury and spent four days in hospital.

The man with the dog left the scene on a bike.

Officers have been carrying out enquiries to identify the man since the attack, which happened on 4 August at around 7.45pm.

West Midlands Police want to speak to the dog’s owner, pictured in the image below. Police have released footage from the incident, which you can see above, showing the dog attack.

Police statement

Inspector Leanne Chapman, from the force’s Dangerous Dog Unit, said: “The video makes shocking viewing, and you can see the sheer force that the victim is hit with.

“We believe the dog involved may be a bull breed, and it’s really important that we hear from anyone who knows the man in the images so that we can take steps to protect the public from harm in the future.

“Thankfully, the victim is now recovering, although she is walking with the aid of a frame.

“Her dog suffered puncture wounds to her neck, and is now wary of other dogs, but is recovering well.”
