Golden sands 90 minutes from Birmingham crowned one of world's best beaches

A stunning location just 90 minutes from Birmingham, has been crowned one of the world's best beaches, offering golden sands and a Blue Flag award.

Birmingham’s position in the centre of the country, miles from the nearest coastline, means those of us here in the city feel the heat more than most.

But did you know that one of the UK’s best inland beaches is located just 90 minutes away from Birmingham?

Rutland Water Beach

Located near Oakham, in Leicestershire, Rutland Water Beach offers 140 metres of sandy shoreline despite being dozens of miles from the coast.

Rutland Water's Sykes Lane beach was awarded the Blue Flag in 2024, making it the first inland bathing water in England to receive this prestigious award.

It has once again - in 2025 - been awarded a Blue Flag, which is good news for people in Birmingham, as Rutland Water is only a 90-minute drive from the city and offers a beautiful beach with sandy areas and plenty of space for swimming and paddling. The beach is free to use, though parking fees apply.

In recent weeks dozens of beaches and marinas across the continent have been awarded Blue Flag status, which recognises sites meeting strict criteria.

The first inland bathing water location in England to be awarded a coveted Seaside Award, Rutland Water is the perfect place to relax and unwind on sunny days.

The Blue Flag beach award is widely considered the gold standard for beaches. It’s clean, safe and beautiful.
