Gilders Yard: Inside the Grade II listed Jewellery Quarter factory where you can now rent a home

Gilders Yard in the Jewellery Quarter will welcome its first residents from September 2022 and offers 158 new rental homes

A stylish new residential development is available for renter on the former site of renowned local jewellery manufacturer, John Ashford & Son.

Gilders Yard in the Jewellery Quarter will welcome its first residents from September 2022 and offers 158 new rental homes in the area with a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments - some of which have the original factory features with floor to ceiling windows and ornamental metal work.

The original building was scarred by shrapnel during the war but the factory continued to operate. The three-storey factor, a Grade II listed building, has been carefully and considerately renovated by Grainger and Clegg Construction Limited bringing a combination of old and new.

The name of the building was inspired from the term ‘gilding’ to pay tribute to the former factory previously owned by ‘gilt toy maker’, John Ashford & Son, with ‘gilt toys’ referring to small articles worn by a person, such as buttons, buckles and cuff links.

Grainger PLC collaborated with sisters Sally Melton and Gill Walker – great-granddaughters of Joseph Aitken who worked for John Ashford & Son in the mid-1880s before purchasing the firm in 1905. The residential development is a built to rent one.

The architecture has been designed to pay homage to the former site, with two of the buildings featuring a distinctive terracotta exterior influenced by Regnum – a brand of cufflink which was produced by John Ashford & Son.

The apartment complex will also feature an internal display showcasing a collection of original enamelled cufflinks, tie clips and enamelled brooches from the archive of the former factory.

Gilders Yard also features a range of high-quality resident amenities including a co-working space and resident’s lounge, as well as a gym, outdoor courtyard garden and an on-site Resident Services team – all included within the rent.

Rental prices at Gilders Yard start from £925 per month and homes come complete with additional amenities, superfast broadband and a dedicated onsite Resident Services team.

Open days will take place at Gilders Yard on 2-3 September – to attend call 0161 9293197 or visit https://www.gilders-yard.co.uk/contact to request a viewing.
