Poli on York Road, King’s Heath, has closed due to tough trading conditions

Poli on York Road in King’s Heath has closed its doors due to difficult trading conditions in the hospitality industry.

The closure comes just one day after the shock announcement that Purnell’s restaurant, also in the city, has closed its doors after 17 years.

With five and four-star reviews on Tripadvisor, Poli was known for its woodfired pizzas, craft beer and unusual roast dinners.

It was especially praised by customers for its small plates and casual atmosphere. A post on the Poli Facebook page said: “It’s with great sadness that we announce the permanent closure of Poli.

“After over 5 years on York Road, our time has very sadly come to an end.

“We managed to ride the storm of Covid and come out of the other side fighting, but it’s no secret how difficult it is to run a restaurant in the current economic climate and it’s been a painful process to have to come to such a tough decision.

“A huge thank you goes to the talented kitchen team, whose passion for creating some of the best food in Brum made Poli what it was, and the front of house team, who always gave Poli a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

“It’s been a great honour to be a part of the Kings Heath community and to see York Road flourish and grow into such a vibrant hub for local families, as well as visitors from near and far.

“Thank you to every single person that has ever dined with us. This is an announcement that we’ve been dreading having to make and we’re sorry we could continue no more.”

A message on their website says: “Permanently closed.”

The shock closure of two popular eateries within days in Birmingham has raised questions about the wider issues ongoing in the hospitality industry.
