Fast food chain McDonald’s has unveiled plans to build a drive thru restaurant at Birmingham Airport.

Documents submitted to Solihull Council reveal the plans for a site on Car Park 6 of BHX.

In the planning document Lichfields, the agent for McDonald’s, writes the economic benefits of the proposed development “are considerable” creating 185 jobs during construction and 75 equivalent full time jobs once the restaurant has opened.

McDonald’s says the site has been chosen as it offers a “good level of walking, cycling public transport and vehicle accessibility”.

The proposed site is south east of the Airport Way/Viking Road/Jetstream Road roundabout and originally became a car park for BHX in February 2001.

The 309 square metre restaurant would be in the colours of the McDonald’s brand and provide the option for diners to either eat in or use the drive-thru to takeaway.

Artist’s impressions of the proposed restaurant are also included within the plans showing the site and the outdoor seating area. The application is for the change of class to a restaurant as well as access and landscaping in the area and the ‘Golden Arches’ signage.

What’s been said about the plans?

Lichfield’s write: “The proposed development will bring a vacant site into active use, supporting the airport’s vital economic role in the region whilst generating additional economic benefits for the local area, including the creation of jobs

“The proposed development will be of a contemporary design, incorporating sustainable measures within its fabric, and being entirely suitable, having regard to the array of modern development which characterises the designated airport area.

“McDonald’s is a strong advocate of sustainability, with almost all restaurants powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, and 80 per cent of their packaging is recyclable. As a result, the proposal would deliver social, economic, and environmental benefits to the local area.”

BHX currently has a Greggs, Burger King, Pret and Costa.
