We tried The Ivy’s festive menu — we're still talking about the three-meat Christmas Shepherd's Pie

Birmingham’s The Ivy restaurant has just launched its Festive menu for 2025.

If Christmas had a headquarters, I’m pretty sure it would be The Ivy on Temple Row.

The place was absolutely buzzing when we arrived — twinkling lights, chatter everywhere, and that unmistakable Ivy sparkle that makes everything feel a little extra special.

We’d gone for the Festive Set Menu (because why not lean into Christmas properly?), and honestly — it didn’t disappoint.

£55 for two courses or £60 for three, and yes, you even get your own Ivy Christmas cracker. It’s festive, it’s fancy, and it’s full of flavour.

We both kicked things off with the French Onion Soup, and wow — what a start. Rich, deep, and comforting with that glorious layer of gratinated cheese and a crisp crouton floating like a crown on top.

You know when something’s so good, you stop talking for a minute? That was us.

My dining partner went classic with the Turkey Ballotine — beautifully tender, wrapped around apricot and cranberry pork stuffing, served with a pig in blanket (because obviously), parsley and sprout mash, and a cranberry chutney that hit all the right notes.

A drizzle of red wine sauce tied it all together — festive perfection on a plate.

I went rogue with the Christmas Shepherd’s Pie, which turned out to be a total winner. Imagine a rich, hearty mix of duck, lamb, and beef under a golden mash potato topping, lightly baked with sage and a whisper of orange zest.

Add in that same cranberry chutney and red wine sauce, and you’ve got comfort food that’s dressed up for the holidays.

We couldn’t resist the sides either — glossy Brussels sprouts in a chestnut glaze (yes, they made sprouts exciting) and green beans with almonds for a bit of crunch and colour.

To finish? The Christmas Crème Brûlée — silky, creamy, perfectly torched, and the best kind of festive indulgence. It was one of those desserts that makes you linger over your spoon because you don’t want it to end.

By the time we left, the place was still full of happy diners clinking glasses and pulling crackers — exactly the kind of scene that makes you feel like Christmas has officially started.

If you’re in Birmingham this season and looking for somewhere that delivers festive food with flair, The Ivy Temple Row has it down to an art. Just bring your appetite — and maybe a bit of sparkle of your own.
