Our Project Peter Pan gives a voice to a ‘lost generation’ unable to afford housing in the run-up to the general election

Rising energy bills, high unemployment rates, a competitive job market and increasing house prices make it a very difficult time to be a young adult in the UK today.

Compared to previous generations, it may be much more difficult for people in their late 20s and early 30s to achieve financial stability in the post-pandemic world.

Finding work after finshing study can also be a challenge. In a new video, which you can watch on Shots!TV, here, National World recently spoke to 30-year-old Daniel Batey from Sunderland, who was hoping to move to Newcastle after the pandemic, bu says he has been priced out of the market.

He said: “I’ve lived with my family for a bit now and have been wanting to move but it’s not an option with the income i’m getting in. I’m just surviving basically.

“Independence has always been very important to me. At the end of the day my goal is to do animation, but once I do get into that I will have to start paying off univesity debts which would leave to another problem with trying to get housing.”

Like countless others, Freya has been in rented accommodation since her university days. The prospect of buying her own property seems distant, obscured by towering student debt. Despite her best efforts to climb the housing ladder, the rungs remain just out of reach.

She said: ”I have been in rented accommodation ever since uni, and definitely no prospective buying anywhere anytime soon. Huge amounts of student debt have not even been scratched yet.”
