Bike Thefts: The best and worst places to live in Birmingham if you want to keep your bike

The summer months are upon us and more and more people are encouraged to get out and cycle again.

Despite being good for our health and wellbeing, bikes aren’t always the cheapest thing to purchase, so ensuring they are safely secured is a top priority.

Making sure it’s safely locked away is important to ensure that no sticky fingers get their hands on your two wheels.

There are however other options if you’re concerned about owning a bike and keeping it safe.

In March 2022 it was revealed that more than 200,000 people had used the West Midlands Cycle Scheme since its launch a year ago.

The West Midlands Cycle Scheme has 1,350 branded pedal bikes and 150 electric bikes that are hireable by the public.

Transport for West Midlands introduced the scheme to encourage people to get cycling instead of choosing the car alternative.

This was part of larger travel plans for the region with the target to achieve 5% of journeys taken by bike by 2023.

Places with worst bike theft in Birmingham

The worst place for bike theft in Birmingham is Birmingham city centre.

There have been 27 bike thefts in the city centre since the beginning of the year.

In a close second is Edgbaston with 26 bike thefts since the start of the year.

These places have a higher number of thefts than most parts of Birmingham with third place going to Selly Oak.

Selly Oak has seen 13 bike thefts being reported to the police this year.

Places with least bike theft in Birmingham

Lots of areas across Birmingham have not had any bike thefts reported to the police since the start of the year.

This doesn’t mean that these places haven’t had any bike thefts but this is determined by whether the incidents were reported to the police.

A few of the places with no bike thefts are Sutton New Hall, Oscott and Soho Road.
