Watch: Residents scare off tagger from trendy trainer shop in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham

A councillor has slammed an act of vandalism after a mysterious tagger was filmed spray painting across a Birmingham trainer shop. Footage showed the vandal scribbling ‘fakes’ on The Pawn Shop, based in Jewellery Quarter, at around 10pm on Tuesday, September 26.

The perpetrator fled the scene after being disturbed and confronted by nearby residents. Jewellery Quarter councillor Chaman Lal said the incident was “not acceptable” and called for justice.

Kam, who owns the trendy store, based in Augusta Street, is offering a £1,000 cash reward to anyone who can help identify the individual in the clip shared on his social media platforms.

He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service he hasn’t reported the incident to police. The Pawn Shop prides itself on selling authentic and high-quality trainers – as well as art, clothing and merchandise.

Kam, who opened the store in 2021, said: “We truly have no idea why someone would do this. The only thing we can think of is jealousy. Either that or a customer tried to sell us fakes and we denied their wish.

“The Pawn Shop and our customers feel angered and disappointed by this act. It’s hard to see our shopfront defaced, especially because it was designed to serve as a canvas for artists to express their creativity through positive murals. This negative and untrue message goes against what we stand for.

“We’re currently in the process of changing the mural at the front of the shop which is going to cost a lot of money. We’re offering a £1,000 cash reward to anyone who can help us identify the individual in the footage.”

Kam added his store is open as normal and he plans to “bounce back”. Coun Lal added: “I’m sorry to hear about the vandalism at the shop. Vandalism is a crime and it’s not acceptable.”
