159 apartments planned for a car park next to Mailbox in Birmingham city centre

Plans for 159 new apartments on a Birmingham car park right next to the Mailbox could finally get underway after previous planning applications have fallen flat.

The site, facing Suffolk Street on Queensway, had previously been earmarked for a hotel and a bigger apartment development. But, after both developments struggled to get off the ground, plans have now been lodged for two huge apartment blocks which will replace the Queensway car park.

Developers say the new complex will help to “fill in the gap” and provide a consistent look to the local area. Consisting of 1, 2 and 3-bed apartments the new development is just a stone’s throw from Mailbox.

As part of the plans, a communal garden will be included for residents with seating areas and a wild garden. The new apartments will be shared across two apartment blocks- a 12-storey block and a 15-storey block.

Set to tower over the listed Christadelphian Hall on Queensway, developers say the apartment block will “deliver a high-quality development which makes efficient use of a brownfield site.”

A representative for the developer said: “The site is currently a car park on previously developed land which was historically used as part of a wider site in the 1960s for offices and a car showroom.

“The proposal will deliver a high-quality development which makes efficient use of a brownfield site. The proposed development will deliver 159 residential apartments in a city centre location, above the threshold for the provision of affordable housing.

“The development will also create local employment opportunities during the construction and operational stage. The Site is located within a highly sustainable location, within walking distance of New Street train station and the main shopping area of Birmingham city centre.

“The site also sits close to many transport links, including; trains, trams, buses, coaches, cycle routes and key pedestrian routes including nearby canal network. All these links connect the proposal into the city centre, the wider city of Birmingham and further afield.”
