Under the warmest sun of the year so far, crowds gathered in Oozells Square, Brindleyplace, to mark the arrival of spring with a vibrant celebration of nature, culture, and tradition.
Hosted by the National Trust, the Spring Equinox event brought the city’s favourite blossoms into focus, offering a refreshing escape from the everyday hustle.
Lunchtime strollers and nature lovers alike were treated to a carefully curated program of performances and activities, all centred around the beauty and symbolism of cherry blossoms.
Guided nature walks led attendees through the city’s floral gems, encouraging them to take a break from their screens and reconnect with the outdoors. The National Trust also delighted guests with exciting giveaways, including free passes to explore the blossoms at their properties this season.
A standout moment of the afternoon was The Blessing of the Blossoms, an enchanting performance by Gobbledegook Theatre’s Blossom Queens. The immersive act invited attendees to pause, look up, and embrace small moments of wonder in public space. Further adding to the festivities were graceful dance performances by Wan Sheung, capturing the ethereal movement of cherry blossoms in the wind, and an energetic display of cultural music and dance from members of the Czech and Slovak Club UK.
For those wanting a lasting memento of the day, a free polaroid blossom booth offered visitors a picturesque snapshot against the striking backdrop of Brindleyplace’s Prunus serrulata trees.
The celebrations aren’t over yet. The floral festivities continue this Sunday, March 23, with the annual Cherry Blossom Day in collaboration with the National Trust and local partners. From 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., families can enjoy a host of free activities in Oozells Square and Central Square, including a cherry blossom trail and blossom-inspired crafts. At 3 p.m., the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group will bring the day to a serene close with their fourth Cherry Blossom Concert under the canopy of blossoms.
With the city basking in spring’s first warm embrace, Birmingham’s blossom season is officially in full bloom, promising a weekend of beauty, culture, and community celebration.
