We visited the Bun & Barrel in Harborne, one of the Birmingham’s most talked about new venues

The Bun & Barrel has become quite a hit since it opened its doors in January.

The restaurant is tucked away on Harborne high street, but has proved to be very popular with food lovers in recent months. The restaurant recently featured in our list of the highest rated buger joints in Birmingham, and some people have been saying it has the tastiest burgers on offer in the city.

The restaurant is owned by Harborne Kitchen’s Jamie Desogus and Rob Hennebry who have managed restaurants all over the world from Beijing to Dublin to London. Harborne Kitchen has also been featured in The Good Food Guide, and the prestigious Michelin Guide.

Birmingham, and Harborne especially, has a vibrant food scene. The city is renowned for its variety of street food eateries, and Harborne high street has a number of great options, with the Bun & Barrel the latest offering.

I went down to the restaurant on a hot and sunny Wednesday evening to see for myself. The Bun & Barrel certainly has great interior and the restaurant tables were full when I arrived. Fairly dark red lights cover the restaurant and pool table in the back room, giving the eatery a bit of a club vibe, although it has a nice relaxing atmosphere to it. The decor also celebrates musical heritage, and there was a great rock soundtrack playing during my visit.

I had a refreshing Attic Signals brewery IPA to start with to cool down, and then ordered the crispy chicken thigh burger with fries. The food arrived quickly and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. It’s a good size burger certainly the tastiest chicken burger I’ve had in the city so far, and by the time I left I thought I could have easily had a couple of those instead on the one.

They also have a house burger that is made from Himalyan Salt Aged Beef infused with bone marrow, sat in a demi-brioche bun made from scratch - yum! Also on the menu is the soft shell crab burger - which includes tempura crab, mango & chilli salsa, crab mayo, pickled cabbage, matchstick potato and lemon on a demi-brioche B&B bun.

And the popular B&B burger includes Hereford beef patties, pickled cabbage, jalapeño matchstick potato, and American mustard. In terms of prices, the burgers range from £9 to £12 with the fries costing between £3 and £8. There’s also handcrafted ice cream for desert as well as kids meals to cater for everyone.

Even if you just fancy a few drinks around Harborne, the Bun and Barrel is a great option. As well as the IPAs, there’s also pilsners, ciders and pale ales on offer, as well as wines from Wine Freedom in Digbeth on draught, spirits and some brilliant cocktails including an old fashioned and New York minute.

So if you’re on the hunt for a delicious burger, a good family meal or even a quick bite to eat and a few drinks, get yourself down to the Bun and Barrel.
