19 universities in Birmingham & Midlands ranked best to worst in the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025

This year, a total of five universities in the Midlands landed a spot in the top 30 of the national league table, made up of 131 universities.

So how did the universities across the Midlands fare?

The University of Warwick has taken the crown, as it was named the top university in the Midlands by The Sunday Times.

At the bottom, it was the University of Wolverhampton, which has fallen in the rankings of the UK's top universities according to the prestigious guide.

The results of The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025 were published on Friday, revealing the top universities in the Midlands and in the UK.

Here is a list of the best to worst universities in the region and how they ranked in the UK, according to The Sunday Times guide.

1. University of Warwick

The University of Warwick took the top spot in the Midlands and ranked ninth nationally.

It was jointly shortlisted with the University of Leicester for The Sunday Times' overall University of the Year 2025.

2. Loughborough University

Loughborough University followed closely behind in second place. It took the tenth spot in the national league table.

The Sunday Times Good University Guide also awarded it Sports University of the Year 2025, with the number of medals who studied and trained at the university achieved by athletes at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics coming in at 35.

3. University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham ranked in third place in the Midlands and 22nd in the list of top universities in the UK.

4. University of Leicester

The University of Leicester came in at number four in the Midlands list and ranked 27th nationally.

It was jointly shortlisted by The Sunday Times Good University Guide for its overall University of the Year, 2025.

It rose seven places this year to rank in the top 30 UK universities.

5. University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham came in at the fifth spot in the Midlands and landed at number 30 on The Sunday Times' national league table.

6. Aston University

Aston University ranked in sixth place in the Midlands and 35th nationally, according to the university guide.

7. Nottingham Trent University

Nottingham Trent came in at number seven in the Midlands and ranked 42nd nationally.

It was also The Sunday Times Good University Guide's runner up for Modern University of the Year, 2025.

Nottingham Trent gained a gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework and is also the top-tanked modern university in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (Bucs) league, according to The Times.

8. Harper Adams University

Harper Adams University near Newport in Shropshire ranked eighth on the Midlands list and made number 53 on the national league table.

9. Coventry University

Coventry University landed in ninth place and took number 54 nationally, according to The Sunday Times guide.

10. University of Lincoln

The University of Lincoln just about made it into the list of top ten universities in the Midlands, ranking 56th nationally.

11. Keele University

Keel University, near Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, came in at number 11 in the region and ranked 57th in the list of top UK universities.

12. University of Derby

The University of Derby landed at 12th place in the Midlands and ranked 77th nationally.

13. Bishop Grosseteste University

Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln was concluded to be the 13th best university in the Midlands and 86th best nationally, according to The Sunday Times Guide.

It was also named runner-up for University of the Year for Teaching Quality, 2025.

14. Birmingham Newman University

Birmingham Newman University ranked 14th in the Midlands and 90th in the UK.

15. University of Worcester

The Sunday Times guide ranked the University of Worcester in 15th place in the Midlands and 99th nationally.

16. Staffordshire University

Staffordshire University, which has a main campus in Stoke-on-Trent alongside other campuses in the county including in Stafford and Lichfield, ranked 16th in the Midlands and 101st nationally.

17. Birmingham City University

Birmingham City University, which is based in the heart of the city, came in 17th place regionally and 107th in the list of top universities in the UK.

De Montfort, based in Leicester, took the 18th spot in the Midlands and 113th nationally.
