Having made significant impacts with its sustainability projects, The Olive School, Birmingham is celebrating after receiving the accreditation from Eco-Schools – the world’s largest schools’ environmental programme.

The Green Flag status highlights the school’s commitment to sustainable development and global citizenship whilst also raising its profile in the local community as a forward-thinking and environmentally conscious change-maker.

Spearheading environmental action in their school and local community, pupils have embraced their roles as eco-warriors and have worked hard to recycle, reduce and reuse.

Charging up change, the school put its energies into a mammoth recycling effort as part of the Big Battery Hunt – a nationwide recycling challenge that inspires pupils to power change across their schools and wider communities. With over a billion batteries consumed in the UK every year – and less than half of them getting recycled – pupils, parents and staff came together to collect over 1,300 used batteries as part of the UK’s biggest school battery recycling programme.

Taking ownership of their local community and changing it for the better, pupils also sprung into action as part of the Great Big Spring Clean – the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign. Now in its ninth year, Keep Britain Tidy’s annual litter-picking programme saw the school community join forces to collect bags of litter from the school grounds and surrounding areas.

Inspired and encouraged to take responsibility for their environment, pupils demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability and service that has also seen them further increase their recycling efforts through the installation of a new compost bin.

“This accreditation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our pupils. Their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability has not only transformed our school community but has also laid the foundation for a greener future.

“It’s inspiring to see our pupils lead initiatives that promote awareness and positive change, and our Green Flag status reflects their passion and perseverance in making a difference. I have no doubt they will continue to inspire others in the community to join us on this important journey.”
