Services to remain at West Midlands NHS Trust

The Trust will open Midland Metropolitan University Hospital on 6 October in Smethwick with a large accident and emergency department.

On the same day, the Trust’s Sandwell Hospital will change its name to Sandwell Health Campus, whilst City Hospital will become City Health Campus on 10 November.

Sandwell Health Campus will offer:

• Outpatients appointments.
• Day case surgery.
• Expanded Urgent Treatment Centre.

The accident and emergency (A&E) department will close on 6 October. Patients normally attending the hospital for emergency care should go to Midland Met A&E.

Meanwhile, City Health Campus will close its A&E on 10 November and will retain the following services:

• The Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre – delivering eye outpatients clinics, inpatients and surgery.
• Birmingham Treatment Centre will host outpatient appointments and short stay surgery.
• Sheldon Block will continue to treat cardiac rehabilitation and offer therapy services.

Warren Grigg, Director of Estates Development at SWB NHS Trust, said: “There will be lots of services remaining at Sandwell Health Campus and some new ones too.

“An expanded Urgent Treatment Centre will be open seven days a week seeing over 35,000 people with minor and intermediate emergency needs.

“A major outpatient centre able to offer adult and paediatric consultation in key specialties and there will be a chemotherapy unit for cancer care as well as short stay surgery.

“It will be our research and development hub, home to our education centre, and the home for many consultants as well as the Trust’s leadership team.

“Meanwhile at City, to deliver better care, we will be closing some sections of the hospital and only keeping the best of the existing buildings.”

All patients should attend their appointments as planned and ensure they are attending the right location.
