RAF Veteran’s wish takes flight at the Midland Air Museum

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Fountains care home in Solihull have been making resident wishes come true.

For Ray, a former RAF Aircraft Assistant from Kenley, Surrey, sitting in a pilot's seat was a lifelong dream — one he finally fulfilled during a recent group visit to the Midland Air Museum in Coventry.

Ray, who served in the Royal Air Force during his younger years, worked diligently behind the scenes servicing gliders and planes at the Kenley airfield. Although he never had the chance to fly, he played a vital role in keeping aircraft ready and safe — a responsibility he carried with pride.

During the museum trip, surrounded by iconic aircraft and fellow enthusiasts, Ray’s face lit up with sheer joy as he was invited to sit in the cockpit of a vintage jet. It was a simple gesture with a profound impact.

“He was beaming. To see Ray finally take the pilot’s seat it was incredibly moving. He kept saying, ‘I never thought I’d sit here.’ It meant the world to him.” Expressed Louise Crooks Activity Coordinator

The Midland Air Museum provided a perfect setting not only for learning and reminiscing but also for making meaningful new memories. Ray’s story is a touching reminder that it’s never too late for a wish to come true.
