Birmingham's new £24m student building launches bringing art, poetry and culture and investment to the city.

June 13th sees launch of a brand new 167-bedroom student residence opening in central Birmingham, serving the cities growing student population, and also bringing with it a host of art and culture for the local community - a new poetry garden from Birmingham's poet laureate, a sculpture and national photographic exhibition, Photo North, from local students and focussed on Birmingham's community.

The £24 million project from student developer Alumno, was funded by Who Hup Holdings Limited and built by GMI Construction Group. It has transformed a former BT brownfield site on Dogpool Lane to accommodate the increasing number of students from local universities, including Birmingham’s School of Dentistry.

The local talented photographers will get the chance to exhibit their work among the work of established photographers. The event which is themed ‘community’, is sponsored and hosted by student residence developer, Alumno, who are passionate about integrating the arts and culture of the local community into their new developments. The competition is nationally recognised as one of the most valued competitions by educational organisations across the UK.

Photo North is the brainchild of Sharon Price and Peter Dench who have produced over 100 curated events. This particular exhibition will feature professional social documentary and portrait photographer, Richard Davies who started his career shooting in Birmingham, Photographer, Simon Peter Green, and documentary photographer Ryley Morton.

Co-Curator of the event and photo journalist, Peter Dench said: “Photo North Festival are delighted to bring an inclusive, thought-provoking evening of pop-up exhibitions and events that champion photography, designed to support and stimulate interest within the community.”

David Campbell, Alumno Managing Director and sponsor commented: “Alumno is passionate about developing young talent in the cities and communities in which we build. Integrating artwork into our student residences brings a sense of common ground and can tell a community’s story, to inspire reflection and create connections. It is also an opportunity for emerging photographers to exhibit among some big names in their region. The Birmingham event will reflect the vibrant arts and culture in the city through pictures and bring talented young photographers together - a fitting addition to our new building.”
