John Odiaka has found a way to build a sustainable career from his diverse skill set and break away from the traditional 9-to-5. After being introduced to Airtasker, the local services marketplace, by a family member, John began completing tasks ranging from furniture assembly to gardening, handyman work, decorating, cleaning and more.
This flexibility has allowed the former healthcare assistant to embrace a full-time career without being tied to a conventional job. Today, he relies on the platform as his primary source of income, and can take home over £2,000 a month since signing up in early 2024.

Tim Fung, Founder and CEO of Airtasker, added, “Airtasker’s annual awards are all about recognising and rewarding Taskers for their skills and it’s amazing to see that more people are using the platform as their main source of income and starting their own businesses.”
“In 2024, Airtasker grew in the UK as we launched in Manchester and Birmingham, where we have welcomed many more individuals to take on flexible work to earn extra money. It’s great to see winners from across the UK recognised for their skills and taking charge of their work-life-balance.”
Having always been naturally handy, John developed his skills through an apprenticeship and hands-on experience in construction jobs while previously living in Nigeria.

Beyond earning money, he has formed meaningful connections with clients, many of whom rebook him for future tasks. One standout moment for John was earning a total of £3,000 in the lead up to Christmas last year.

"I prefer this over a traditional 9-to-5 job because it allows me to work on my own terms," John says. "I have the freedom to decide when and how much I want to work."
“There's a job for everyone on here,” John continues. “Whether it's IT, engineering, or handyman work, you can find something that suits your skills. It’s a great way to earn if you commit to it and grow your reputation.”
Looking forward, the self-made handyman looks to use his success on the platform to build his savings towards furthering his education, having previously studied at Coventry University, and eventually hopes to start his own business.
