Birmingham students broaden their horizons with City Academy’s 'Opportunity Day'

City Academy Birmingham, part of CORE Education Trust, is transforming the educational experience for its students through its unique 'Opportunity Days,’ part of the school’s ambitious City Entitlement programme.
Earlier this month, students took part in a range of fully funded enrichment activities designed to broaden their horizons and bring learning to life. Year 7 students explored Chester Zoo and enjoyed learning about the natural world. Year 8 stepped back in time at Shrewsbury Prison, discovering more about history and justice, while Year 10 visited South and City College, introducing them to a range of study and career opportunities.
The school has made a significant financial commitment to provide Opportunity Days, investing around £30,000 annually to fund three such events throughout the year. This funding ensures every student can access exciting and interesting experiences regardless of their financial circumstances and delivers on the school’s promise to provide a rich and inclusive education.
Rebecca Bakewell, Headteacher at City Academy Birmingham, said:

“Opportunity Days are at the heart of our commitment to ensuring that every student has access to enriching experiences that inspire and challenge them. By funding these trips through our City Entitlement programme, we can remove financial barriers and ensure that every child has the chance to explore, discover, and grow.
“We know that these experiences help our young people develop confidence, curiosity, and resilience, equipping them with the skills and mindset they need to thrive both at school and in life. I’m so proud of the joy and excitement these days bring to our students and am grateful to our staff for making them such a success.”
City Academy’s Opportunity Day showcases the school’s commitment to providing students with unforgettable experiences that go beyond the classroom, helping to equip them with both academic knowledge and valuable life skills to shape their future.
