Ninestiles, an Academy, part of the Summit Learning Trust, has been marking Black History Month this October.

This year’s theme, ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, is a powerful call to recognise and correct the stories of Black history and culture. Throughout the month, the school has engaged learners, staff members, and the community in a series of educational and interactive events designed to explore and honour the contributions of Black people to society, both historically and in the present day.

They started their celebration of Black History Month with a special assembly, led by Year 11 Drama students, on some Black inspirational key figures. The following week dance workshops took place that focused on afro beats and Caribbean dancing.

The month culminated in an event organised by the Performing Arts team on Thursday the 24 of October which celebrated the rich history and culture of the Black community. Steel drum music was performed by learners and a selection of Caribbean food was on offer, including jerk chicken and curried mutton.

Some external keynote speakers were also welcomed including Cindy Dacosta a TV model for Adidas and Superdrug, Ken Morris OBE a Headteacher and Marigold Adu, a Ninestiles alumni and winner of the ‘Speak Out’ Challenge.

Alex Hughes, Principal at Ninestiles, an Academy said:

“As we mark Black History Month this year at Ninestiles, an Academy it’s so important that we focus on reclaiming and amplifying narratives that have historically been overlooked or misrepresented.

“We are dedicated to providing young people with a comprehensive understanding of history, which honours the rich and diverse contributions of Black people. This month is about more than learning about the past, it’s about inspiring learners to create a more inclusive future.”
