From the moment the curtain rose, this performance was marked with high anticipation. Whether you’re familiar with the original 1988 John Waters film or the 2007 version featuring stars like John Travolta and Zac Efron.  “Hairspray” is a popular musical that celebrates social change, in the 1960s.

A visual and auditory delight

The production's set design was a feast for the eyes, with colourful backdrops and period-appropriate costumes that perfectly captured the essence of the era.

The opening number, "Good Morning Baltimore," set the tone for the evening, with Katie Brace as Tracy Turnblad delivering a performance full of energy and optimism. Her portrayal of Tracy was both endearing and powerful, embodying the character's dreams and determination.

But the costumes! The audience was dazzled by the array of colourful outfits, each one more fabulous than the last. And the glitter! Oh, the glitter! It was as if Tinkerbell herself had sprinkled her magic dust over the entire cast. The sparkling costumes added an extra layer of magic to an enchanting performance.

Standout performances

One of the standout moments of the evening was Michelle Ndegwa’s rendition of “I Know Where I’ve Been” as Motormouth Maybelle. Her soulful and powerful voice captivated the audience, leaving many visibly moved. This song, which speaks to the struggles and hopes of the past, resonated deeply, reminding everyone of the ongoing fight for equality and justice.

Her stellar performance earned a well-deserved standing ovation.

Neil Hurst and Dermot Canavan, playing Tracy’s parents, Edna and Wilbur, provided much of the comic relief. Their performance of “Timeless to Me” was a delightful blend of humour and heart, showcasing their impeccable timing and chemistry.

Neil Hurst’s playful twist on the words from “I Can Hear the Bells” to “I Can Feel the Bell” added a risqué touch, while Hurst and Canavan’s corpsing only enhanced the humour of the number. The audience’s laughter and applause were a testament to their engaging performance.

A clear message

While Hairspray is undoubtedly a feel-good musical with catchy tunes and lively dance numbers, it also carries a powerful message about tolerance and the fight against racial segregation. This message was particularly poignant in today’s context, where issues of division and discrimination are still prevalent.

The use of projections featuring historical footage of civil rights protests added a layer of authenticity and urgency to the narrative.

An unforgettable finale

The show culminated in the iconic "You Can't Stop the Beat," a number that had the entire audience on their feet, clapping and dancing along. This finale was the perfect end to a night filled with joy, laughter, and reflection. The cast's infectious energy and the uplifting message of the song left everyone with a sense of hope and unity.
