Wolverhampton Wanderers had a fairly frustrating transfer window as Financial Fair Play halted big additions and some key players were sold.
Julen Lopetegui left the club due to an upheaval over a lack of deals and then Gary O’Neil was allowed to bring in a few new faces when Matheus Nunes was sold to Manchester City.
Wolves had to spend the Nunes wisely and they did so by leaving £21 million to spare, signing Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Santiago Bueno and Enso González for a combined £32 million.
Nonetheless, the squad is probably in a worse place than it was when the window opened, especially given the departure of club legend Rúben Neves to Al-Hilal.
There’s still time to improve things, however, as the Old Gold are still allowed to sign free agents to fill voids, even after last Friday’s transfer deadline.
With that in mind, here are nine potential additions Wolves could make on a free, including a Chelsea legend and two former Manchester United stars.
1. Jesse Lingard (30)
Has already been heavily linked with a potential move. Would be risky given his hit and miss track record but if he can achieve anything like he did at West Ham United, this could be a good move.
2. Eden Hazard (32)
The Chelsea legend still hasn’t been picked up after leaving Real Madrid on a free at the end of June. Has definitely declined but is still just 32 and could be tempted by a return to the Premier League given no interest from the Middle East.
3. Roberto Pereyra (32)
Formerly of Watford, the versatile midfielder is a former Argentina international and still has a couple of decent seasons left in him. The 32-year-old scored five goals in 36 appearances for Udinese in Italy last season.
4. David de Gea (32)
Not one that Wolves particularly need given the upturn in form from Jose Sa, but it would be difficult to turn down the opportunity to sign someone of de Gea’s quality. Just a matter of whether he’d make the step down after Manchester United.
