Neil Warnock names team he wants to win promotion as ex-Aston Villa man claims he is Championship's ‘Milner’

This weekend marks the final chapter of a thrilling battle at both the top and bottom of the Championship table and the fate of rivals West Brom and Birmingham City remains undecided as we approach the last game of the season.

The Baggies are on course for their highest finish since dropping down to the Championship in 2021 and need a victory against Preston to guarantee their place in the play-offs, though a draw should prove sufficient given the team’s superior goal difference to Hull City.

However, Liam Rosenior is determined to sneak his side into the play-offs and believes his Hull team are now performing like a top four side ahead of their game against relegation-strugglers Plymouth.

He said: “The top four have been far away from us in terms of points but in terms of performances we have been right up there. If we play to that level on Saturday, against a really, really physical, strong team who have great motivation themselves, all we can affect is our own performance and give ourselves the best possibility to win.”

West Brom will hope to secure promotion alongside Leicester City and one other automatically promoted team.

Leeds United and Ipswich are battling it out for the final spot, with the Tractor Boys needing only a point at home to relegation-threatened Huddersfield.

Neil Warnock, despite being the former manager of Leeds, is hopeful that Ipswich secure the final automatic spot and has heaped praise on manager Kieran McKenna who is on the verge of back-to-back promotions.

The veteran told BBC News: "This Championship is the toughest it's been for a long time, so even more credit to Ipswich. "When you get promoted from League One, into the Championship, people don't expect you to continue. I did it myself when at Notts County. Everybody wrote us off.

"It looks like Kieran will get automatics. From a manager's point of view, he won't get as many grey hairs by going up straight away, play-offs are more intense."

QPR winger Albert Adomah officially cemented his status as the Championship’s record appearance holder during a 4-0 victory over Leeds, in a game where the R’s secured their second-tier status and consigned Birmingham fans to even more sleepless nights.

The Ghana winger and ex-Aston Villa man who has made over 525 appearances in the Championship has compared himself to James Milner due to his immense longevity in the game.

Milner, who also played at Villa Park, has made a combined  total of 640 Premier League appearances in a career that has spanned over 20 years.

The winger who leaves QPR on a free in the summer said: “I always tell myself I’m the James Milner of the Championship, I think thats the best way to put it.

“He started younger than me (17), I started when I as 20, but I’ve got this longevity still playing for 17 years I believe now.”

Adomah leaves Loftus Road on a free in the summer, but the 36-year-old is adamant he will play until he is at least the age of his squad number, 37.

“I still believe I could do one more season in the Championship or two or three more at a lower level.” He explained.
