Premier League team of the week features Wolves, Newcastle United and Everton stars

The XI of the Premier League’s best-performing players from the weekend of April 27-28, 2024.

Wolverhampton Wanderers returned to winning ways over the weekend, beating relegation battlers Luton Town 2-1 at Molineux after four previous consecutive home defeats.

Gary O’Neil’s men had a late scare as Carlton Morris netted for the Hatters in the 80th minute to reduce the deficit but all three points went the way of the Old Gold. Wolves are now up to 11th place, two points behind AFC Bournemouth in the top-half fight.

It wasn’t such a good weekend for fellow West Midlands side Aston Villa as Unai Emery’s side let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 with Chelsea. The Villans went into the break 2-0 up but crumbled in the second period to allow the determined Blues back into it.

The draw meant Tottenham Hotspur were within seven points with three games in hand but Sunday afternoon spelled an end to that as Spurs lost 3-2 to bitter North London rivals Arsenal. The gap remains seven, putting Villa in the driving seat.

Other standout results included Newcastle United inflicting a 5-1 thrashing to relegate Sheffield United, Manchester United being held to a 1-1 stalemate at Old Trafford by Burnley and Liverpool failing to beat West Ham United, sharing the points in a 2-2 draw.

Taking a look at the weekend as a whole, WhoScored.com has put together a starting XI of the best-performing players, with Wolves included but Villa not. Here’s a look at the full team, starting with the goalkeeper and ending with the striker.
