Unai Emery has confirmed Emiliano Martinez and Youri Tielemans will both undergo scans for injuries sustained during Aston Villa’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea.

The Villans blew a two-goal cushion on Saturday night - dropping two huge points in the intense top-four fight - however both Martinez and Tielemans going off could be the bigger blow. Lucas Digne also went down briefly during the game but the left-back shook off his issue and completed the fixture.

Tielemans was forced to be replaced in the 27th minute with what appeared to be a groin injury as the Belgian held his midriff and limped down the tunnel. Martinez subtly received brief treatment as Tielemans walked gingerly around the pitch. The goalkeeper finished the first half but didn’t re-emerge for the second period and was replaced by Robin Olsen.

“Not yet, tomorrow we will test him,” Emery said in the press conference when asked if he knew more about Martinez’s condition. “Even with the injury of Youri Tielemans we have to wait for tomorrow. Hopefully it’s not a lot for both but I don’t know exactly.

“If Tielemans and Martinez are unavailable for one week, two weeks, three weeks we have to accept it and every situation we are passing for the season we are reacting. We are giving chances to other players to help us. It’s the moment for other players,” Emery continued.

Failing to move nine points ahead of fellow Champions League chasers Tottenham Hotspur was the clear calamity of the night but the pain could be worse still if Martinez and Tielemans’ issues are serious. Birmingham World will report updates as and when they’re available.
