Aston Villa suffered a heavy defeat this afternoon as they lost 4-0 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park. It was a horror show for Aaron Danks and his side in the final game before the Unai Emery era gets underway.

Result aside, a fairly serious incident occurred during the match. Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez went down in the first half after taking a knee to the head but carried on despite advice surrounding concussion.

After persevering for around 10-15 minutes, the Argentine was taken off as he felt he could no longer continue. He was able to walk off the field but appeared to be somewhat dazed as he headed toward the sideline.

Pundit Chris Sutton took to Twitter, reacting to the injury. He said: “Emi Martinez takes a knee to his head, is treated for 5 minutes, and the Villa medical staff decide it’s best to keep him on.

“He plays on for 10/15 mins then goes down again and is subbed. I’ll say it again. Football doesn’t give a toss about its own players! It pretends it cares.”

The former Villa and Birmingham City striker was understandably alarmed by the incident - as were plenty of supporters watching on.

Sweden international Robin Olsen took Martinez’s place for the rest of the fixture. It is unclear how long he could be sidelined for - but an update is expected in due course.
