Aston Villa have got off to a tremendous start to the 2023/24 season, completely exceeding expectations as they are firmly in the Champions League fight.
Only 16 matches have been played, meaning 22 are still to go, but Unai Emery's side have been a joy to watch and are now widely considered contenders for the top four.
The Villans already have a very talented squad but delving into the transfer market might be preferable given Emery will need as many options as possible towards the end of the campaign.
Speculation is already building momentum with the January window now just a few weeks away, so we've taken a look at the latest rumours and formed what could be the new matchday squad come February.
1. GK: Emiliano Martinez
It would be utterly bonkers for Villa to consider replacing Martinez, even if he hadn’t just won the Yashin award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. The trophy just adds further acclaim to the Argentine’s already remarkable reputation.
2. RB: Jeremie Frimpong (in from Bayer Leverkusen)
Sky Germany reports Frimpong, who has been arguably the best right-back in the Bundesliga this season with Leverkusen top, is expected to leave this season. The 22-year-old is said to have a release clause of around £37 million and Villa have been credited with an interest.
3. CB: Ezri Konsa
Recently the recipient of his first senior England call-up, Konsa has been arguably Villa’s best defender this season at a difficult time with previous counterpart Tyrone Mings out injured. Although tough on Diego Carlos to see him benched, Konsa just about edges it.
4. CB: Pau Torres
Signed in the summer for just over £30 million, Pau arrived with a lot of expectations but he’s already matched them. It took a little while to get going back in August and September time, but the Spain international has flourished ever since.
