Aston Villa ‘join race’ to sign League One £10m-rated teenager

Aston Villa have been quick off the mark in adding to their squad this summer.

Aston Villa have joined the race to sign Peterborough United starlet Ronnie Edwards, according to The Sun.

The defender has been a standout player in what has otherwise been a very disappointing season for Posh, who have made a quick return to League One after finishing 22nd this season.

Edwards made 34 appearances in the Championship and has gained interest from a number of clubs due to his impressive form for Grant McCann’s side.

Villa join the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in monitoring the 19-year-old, however it is thought that Posh rate him at around £10 million - a hefty price tag for a teenager that will be playing in the third tier.

While it’s unclear whether Steven Gerrard’s side would be willing to pay the fee to sign Edwards, Posh may struggle to keep hold of the youngster because of their relegation to League One.

Edwards only signed a new deal with Peterborough in May of last year and is currently under contract with the club until 2025.

The Birmingham club have certainly benefited from handing their young talents a chance under Gerrard, with Jacob Ramsey shining in the second half of the campaign, while the likes of Tim Iroegbunam and Carney Chukwuemeka also wormed their way into the team on occasions.
