Aston Villa and Newcastle United rejected as deal confirmed

Former Aston Villa star James Milner reportedly rejected an opportunity to return to the club before signing a new deal with Liverpool.

The 36-year-old spent time on loan at Villa during the 2005/06 season before making a permanent move to Villa Park just over two years later.

Milner went on to score 22 goals in 126 appearances before a £19.8million bid from Manchester City in August 2010 was enough to tempt him away.

After a five-year stay at the Etihad Stadium, Milner joined Liverpool on a free transfer and has helped the Reds to their first Premier League title and their Champions League Final win against Spurs in 2019.

Milner was also part of the Liverpool squad that claimed a domestic cup double with penalty shoot-out wins against Chelsea in both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup Final.

There had been speculation Milner’s time at Anfield was set to come to an end this summer when his current deal came to an end - but talks over a new contract came to a successful conclusion when he agreed to extend his stay by another season earlier this month.

After putting pen-to-paper on the deal, Milner told the club website: "I'm very pleased to be staying for another season," Milner said.

"I have never taken playing for this club for granted and I never will.

"An overriding feeling for me - and a vitally important one in the process - was the belief I can still contribute to the team. The gaffer was clear what he thought and that was a big factor in me extending my contract.”

Goal have now reported Milner opted to sign the new deal despite being the subject of serious interest from former clubs Aston Villa and Newcastle United, as well as a number of MLS clubs.
